Welcome to the Science Mom’s Home Energy Audit Guide!
Why Conduct a Home Energy Audit?
When temperatures change, heating and cooling systems in our homes might have to work extra to keep us (and our kids) comfortable. All that extra work raises our energy bill, and often uses more of the dirty, polluting energy that puts our kids’ future at risk.
By conducting a home energy audit, you’re taking a step toward two main objectives: lowering your energy bill, and conserving energy to help protect your kids’ future!

Investigate Room by Room
Things like insulation, ventilation improvements or door & window upgrades can all reduce the amount of energy it takes to heat and cool your home.
1. Living Spaces
Check windows and doors: inspect your living spaces for drafts, and see if you can find any gaps where the seal isn’t working properly. Even small leaks can let in enough outside air inside, and throw off your heating and cooling. Most leaks can be fixed with tape, caulking, or cheap gaskets from the hardware store.
2. Kitchen
Inspect appliances: if appliances like fridges and freezers have leaks, they use extra energy to keep their temperature. Be sure to check refrigerator and freezer seals for leaks.
3. Bedrooms / Bathrooms
Control temperatures by unplugging chargers and electronic devices when you’re not using them.
Fix leaks: if you find any faucet or toilet leaks, try to get them fixed as promptly as possible to avoid any extra water or energy use
